Refracted Realities in the Light of Urbanism

Talk between the curators collective METASITU (Kiev/Athens), consisting of Liva Dudareva and Eduardo Cassina, and further discussion partners on the experimental research and exhibition project FOUNDATION. The starting point of FOUNDATION is formed by a one-week, inhabitable intervention/retreat. Six artists / architects / urbanists / curators live and work together in the exhibition spaces of the ESSZIMMER with the aim of newly founding a city.

We live in revolutionary times, in which for the first time in human history more than half of the global population is living in cities. Urban space has thus become the standard human habitat. As an environment consisting of built material, but also of the humans who live in it and use it in one way or another – their urban routines and ways of behavior. At these inherent qualities and features, the trajectories of culture(s) and values are refracted. (METASITU, 2018)

Workshop: Inside the prism

11:30 am - 4:30 pm

Workshop for architects, artists, curators and interested people
with Ruth Lorenz

Videonale organises a workshop with the architect and scenographer Ruth Lorenz of Maaskant Berlin.
The workshop is dedicated to students and interested people, with and without design background. Point of departure for the workshop is the exhibition architecture for the exhibition of VIDEONALE.17 under the topic REFRACTED REALTIES in the Kunstmuseum Bonn, designed by Ruth Lorenz.

The workshop focuses on questions around the production and staging of exhibitions:
Which space of possibilities evolves in an exhibition? What happens in this space? Which rules apply? Where are the borders and limitations of staging?
Where do fractures occur? Which settings are produced and how can they be questionned?
The prism – the refractor: The sharpening of perception, the practice of transferring and estranging are key to our practical exercises.

About Ruth Lorenz:
Ruth M. Lorenz is an architect and exhibition designer as well as founder of the studio MAASKANT in Berlin.
She developed exhibitions and light spaces for, among others, the Academy of Arts Berlin, HKW Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe and HMKV hartware MedienKunstVerein Dortmund. The exhibition ›Sounds like Silence‹ at HMKV with Lorenz’ exhibition architecture has been awarded the AICA-Critics Prize. Lorenz has further designed the exhibitions architectures of VIDEONALE.15,16 and 17.
Ruth M. Lorenz gives lectures, teaches at universities and takes part in competition procedures.
